Pull one up and tell us what the roots are like.

Better still take a picture for us.

Are they getting reflected sunlight from a window or other surface ?
They might be ok in full sun but sun x 2 is too much for many plants.

I have had 'Mysteron' circles burnt in the lawn by bird scaring (ha-ha!)  CD`s

They are in sun but sheltered by other plants. Pulled some up and roots were there with no apparent problems. Not sure how they are supposed to grow as not had them before. What I can't understand is the plants not progressing for months on end. Not a cm have they gained. They seem very delicate too as slight handling can break the leaves. This is the second year I have failed to get these to get to flowering stage. It's a mystery. :(

What were the other plants that were sheltering them Hubb?  If they are doing well, perhaps you are better sticking to them and leaving stuff that is tricky for you.  We all have black thumbs for some things and yet can grow other stuff with no effort at all.  No rhyme or reason to it really  :)

I have lots of stuff that just self seeds around the garden if you want easy to grow flowers.  Aquilegia, love-in-the-mist, foxgloves, poppies and probably more if I looked.  I could save you some seeds if you like and post them to you.  No need to pot up - just throw the seeds around where you have gaps and you would have no-fuss flowers for free  :)

That's lovely of you thanks. I do have the plants you mentioned, the aquilegia was sheltering one of the egg plants. Therest are dotted in various places. Just miffed because I propagated them ok and they have nowt wrong with them as far as pests etc but they won't grow bigger. Perhaps the cold has halted them a bit.

Glad to hear you do have some nice things growing  :)  It hasn't been an easy spring to get things going and a check to seedlings can stop them dead.

A lot of these self seeders seem to be hardier if you sow them in the autumn and leave them to overwinter.  Have you got a few poached egg plant seeds you could try again with?  I would sow them direct in the soil and see what happens  :)

It would be really helpful if you could post some clear pictures for us to see.

The plant growing
The root system
The leaves

That sort of thing, otherwise we are just guessing.

Poached egg plant is very low growing, sort of ground hugging plant Hub. It does like being in sun though so maybe it will struggle if put in the shade by other plants or if your site is not bright enough

Well the ones I re-potted in the greenhouse (sun) have withered to pathetic almost stumps. Again, start off with healthy plants that get your hopes up and wallop.....all gone  :(

The ones outside are now shriveled to nothing. You say shade them and they don't like it. In the sun and they get burned. I can't think of any other aspect  :(

I think you may be over cosseting them Hubb.  Poached egg plants are hardy annuals and self seed like mad, so really don't need potting up or growing in a greenhouse.  They do need an open sunny spot, but sun through greenhouse glass is pretty unforgiving for a soft leaved little annual like that :)

If you have seeds left, I still think it is worth trying a few directly sown this autumn in the sunniest bit you have, but they will need their own space.  Any seedling will struggle to compete with an established plant, as CQ has said :)

Well of around 20 plants for almost all to end up withering, shrinking and dying is depressing. Second year and can't get them going to a decent start. Even the ones I dug p from planting out, potted up in fresh compost in the greenhouse have gone to nothing with white mould left.  :(

We need photos, Hubballi.

The plant, soil, where they are in the garden, the roots.

Why are you so reluctant to post pictures ?

especially if they have water on their leaves when the sun shines.

That's actually a myth.

Ok, here is an example of the kind of pathetic size they are at after MONTHS of growth. Ignore the green bits around the plants in the pot, they are mint leaves to try and deter the aphids which of course don't work.
