Can I put leaves in my dalek bin with the lid on?

No, you need to take the lid off first!

Seriously, if you've got a dalek spare it's fine to use as a container to make leaf mould, otherwise put them in bags as previously suggested or mix with other compost material, because leaves on their own will put your dalek out of commission for a lot longer than a mixture of materials.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Perhaps should have mentioned something else about the dalek lid - the objective as with all compost is to keep it uniformly moist but not saturated - with the lid off you're relying on luck and nature to deliver the right amount of water, with the lid on you can control the level yourself, although of course that means you will probably have to water it from time to time.

Thought I'd gone to heaven today... I have been contemplating sweeping up some leaves on our estate greens but not got around to doing it... Today I stumbled upon the council mower/hoover machine on our estate today and managed to collect 4 big compacted builders bags full of leaves... 2 went straight to the plot compost heap, 1 to a storage container and 1 for the OH garden leaf mold pile...

Ohhhhh.. gold dust in the making..

Offloading my "van" and the compost heap with 2 bag fulls....

Well done Gav, if this happened down our way, the jobsworths would refuse to part with the leaves!

They even offered me a whole truck load but the spot at the plots for dumping is presently full of tree clippings - wait till its empty and I'll sniff them trucks out!!

I cover the top of my large leaf container with old cheap green garden netting held in place with a few short bits of garden cane to stop the top leaves getting blown about when or if they get dry (not been a problem this year has it?).

I have also put the leaves in the dalek bins this year; they seem useless for anything else so I thought that I would experiment. My plan was lids off when it rains and lids on for the remainder of the time.

I'd rather do a controlled sprinkling and close up... You dont want too much rain in.

The local school are letting sweep up the leaves in the play grounds (saves the caretaker a job). I'm using them in the chicken run first, once they have been pooped in for a week the leaves are put in the big compost bin on the plot. Should be really good stuff this time, next year.

Advice taken, leaves watered and lids back on.
Managed to get the OH to turn the compost over at the same time  :D Bit of a scare though as the bits of my Yukka giant that I had thrown on the compost heap had all started to grow

I cant remember who said that Yukkas need either some roots or some leaves when you propogate them; They dont !!!

Not quite on topic but based on use of black dalek bins. Mine gets my couch grass, weedy nasties i dont want to put anywhere else and some wee or chicken/rabbit manure. The darkness seems to sort it all out.
