Ikea do Kilner style jars at a quid for a 500ml one - they do 1.5 and 2 litre ones too, as well as litre bottles with the Grolsch type lids.  I've been using these for storing dried herbs, my own sun-dried toms, chilli sauce and jams and chutneys with no problems so far, but I am just a beginner!  The seals didn't melt in the oven at  100C+, so I think they're doing the job quite nicely.  They look nice, too.

Dunelm used to do Kilner jars too, but I've not been to one for a while, so don't know if they still do.

There's also a shop on eBay based in N Wales where she does all different sizes, but I think she must be away at the moment, because they aren't coming up on a search this week.  But there are lots of others on there, however postage is a bit steep as they are heavy!

The local QD has some nice lttle jars with Grolshe type tops for 3 for 99p, ok for storage but not for bottleing or oven use.  The Kilner ones come up on Freecycle sometimes and you could put a "wanted" on.

Make sure you get the tomatoes absolutely bone-dry. If you get water into oil infusions, you're 100% sure of ending up with mouldly oil/tomatoes within a week. I've done "sun dried tomatoes" but it takes so long to get them dry that i only do it about halfway and store them in freezer bags to heat up and toss with pasta later on.
wistfully hoping to one day be mostly organic gardener in North London.

If you do, be very careful and keep a cup of water in with it. IF there's too little stuff for the microwave to work on, you can kill the magnetron in it. Breaking the microwave that way would be the luckiest outcome... it's very dangerous to have it burn out.

I've had a bit of an old look about at the microwave option and found you are right it's not a good method.
