DIY Tumbling Composter
« on: March 05, 2011, 22:13 »
Tried a wormery several years ago but it didn`t work out so this is what I might have a go at building this year.

That looks like a good project. Let us know how it goes. :)

I like this method better for supporting the barrel. Just bang two fence posts into the ground.

But surely there has to be a point when I stop adding fresh material... so will I need more than one?

There is also a warning about not allowing  the compost to get too hot. I thought this was the idea. The more heat the faster it decomposes?

The cynical side of me is saying if tumbling composters were any good everybody would have one.
There would be huge fields full of them producing compost commercially.

If you need a project and exercise an aerobics step would be easier.  :)

I myself fancy making a motorised soil/compost sieve. :)

I think the comercially available ones are expensive but at the same time flimsy and thats why I`m not going to shell out for one, but if I can build one for a few quid, if it doesn`t work then nothing lost.

I`ve had a dalek for five years and had nothing out of it yet! My own fault really, in the past I`ve just used it as an organic material dump.

I don't just have one, I have two!

They crop up time to time time on Ebay for about a fiver, hence having two. :D

Even in through the winter, the veg matter has broken down in just a matter of weeks.

What I don't like about them, is that the compost tends to ball. I have now started to rotate into a third conventional composter to use as a kind of finisher come store.

I like the home made for two reasons, the first is initiative to have a go, and te second, is that the shop bought ones are over priced, so any chance of a money grabbing company missing a sale is always a good thing!

they use a massive version of a tumbling composter at the Eden Project called a digester

its actually a sealed Archimedes screw where raw material is fed into the bottom and usable compost is removed from the top. apparently it only takes a few weeks.

im considering making one myself out of a 50gallon drum and a timber frame.
