Elfe potatoes mega-harvest!
« on: September 01, 2018, 12:30 »
We grew these last year in our raised beds with no earthing-up and they were excellent in cooking as mashed, baked or roasted and the taste was lovely and buttery, so we grew them again this year. OH has just come in with a whopping bag of them and they were all from one root! Best thing is so far they're not being eaten by slugs. We occasionally had the sprinkler on over summer and just fed them with BFB then later with chicken manure pellets. Has anyone else tried them?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Sounds like one to grow.
interesting to hear you get away with out earthing up.
I see some of mine are a very dark green!
grow them a bit close together and once the foliage is up cant get down the rows to earth up.

On my list for next year, then.  It sounds like a really good all rounder, and if it could survive this year's weather and still give a good crop it will be worth giving a go.

I planted them in April with a trowel to a depth of its handle, bunged them in and just left them. I didn't chit them either. Perhaps the drier weather made their roots go more downward for moisture. I haven't tried them as a salad potato but they may be ok to boil if you don't overdo the time in the pan. There honestly wasn't a mark on them, whereas the Charlottes started to get a bit slugged, and the Lady Crystal even more so I'm not growing them again.
