Runner beans
« on: May 28, 2018, 06:47 »
Well,the beans are in.
I made a bean trench a couple of months ago.
My Question is,what do I feed them with.
And how often,
Thanks

I put a bit of blood, fish and bone when I plant the beans out but don't bother feeding them after that.  They should be OK if the ground has been prepared properly last autumn.   In some years where I have just bunged them in without doing a trench the previous autumn a foliar seaweed feed will perk them up a bit if they aren't looking good.  Other than that, mine are left to their own devices.

Chicken pellets in the hole when I plant, then they’re on their own, you could sprinkle some around the plants, rain will take it down

BFB is a no-no here unless I need any free fox excavation work doing!

I just scatter some dried chicken manure pellets over the trench before planting - some fall in the planting holes, some stay on top to get washed in by the rain later. I also sow a few extra seeds direct, which usually germinate OK and help prolong the cropping season a little.

My soil is very light and rather low in nutrients, so I sometimes give them a liquid feed if they're looking a bit pale early on.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I am surprised they don't dig for the chicken manure pellets as well as bfb.  We used to have a problem with a visiting urban fox on our site who would certainly dig if you used chicken manure pellets but he/she has either moved on or is no more.  Well, I haven't had any problems for a while.  We have a clay type soil which seems to suit beans quite well.

Yes, it was probably the cubs which used to find the smell of chicken poo irresistible until they learned that it didn't taste as good as it smelt!

I do prepared beds before the beans are planted by over the winter throw veg peelings down and a small layer of homemade compost at a few intervals and lightly dig it in a few times over that time along with the worms dragging it down. A couple of times in spring and a week before sowing add a light layer of homemade compost and lightly dig in.
Never tend to feed them when they are growing, except throw down a light layer of veg peelings now and again between the rows and just let the worms pull it down.
