Growing grapes-need advice
« on: July 30, 2016, 17:39 »
Hi Everyone
Once my greenhouse is up,don't know when!,but i would like to have a grape vine growing,i know zero about growing them, but what i do know they will be a type for eating,i don't drink so i won't be making wine or any other drink.
Which make the best table grapes?,where do you buy a grape plant from that is good quality?.
Any help would be great.

Hello

I bought my flame grapevines from UK Victorian nursery. They come bare rooted so it's November to March timeframe they will be sent out.

Stick them in a large pot and allow plenty of drainage, spread the roots out, have bricks in the bottom to allow drainages...I skewered my plastic tub with "flood over holes," and don't peel off the wax covering. The will buds grow through okay. Lost one of the two, but I'm getting this year a few small bunches forming.

I listen to BBC radio four Gardeners World and Bob Flowerdew (bobflowerdew.com) was highlighting his experiences with dessert grapes, worth checking. Once you have selected your preferred variety look for a local grower or supplier, if you want to plant your vine outside and train it into the greenhouse you need expert advice. The reason is that the best vines are grafted on to a rootstock and you do want to get one suitable for your area. I certainly don't want to cloud your dream, but success is all about preparation and a good book on viticulture is a great start.
A weed is a plant that's in the wrong place and intends to stay

I bought three vines from Vitoriana Nurseries. Arrived damaged, very poor customer service, going to court.
