Potting Soil
« on: February 21, 2014, 23:47 »
Sorry in advance if this is in the wrong thread.

Hi,

What potting mix do we all use?

I'm in second year of having my plot, I've got a quite well established compost heap and a wormy.  I've decided to make my own potting/seedling mix it consists of.

  • Compost
  • Well rotted manure
  • Wormy soil
  • Sand

Does this sound good or is there anything I should add or change?

Thanks
Dear God, Please can you stop the wind and rain and bring on the nice weather. Amen

Horticultural grit is better than sand as it aids drainage. I would leave the manure out too as you will not know if any nasties are in it. Mix in some Growmore or Blood fish and bone too.

If this is a home made sub for seed and potting compost, the manure and wormery soil may make it too rich and wet.  Most seed compost is a free draining loam/sand/compost mix. You would need to be careful about introducing fungus spores and other nasties as well.

I tend to buy the component parts and mix up stuff as I need from multi-purpose, John Innes, horticultural sand and grit.  Most seeds just get MP.  On potting on they may get MP and some JI so the pot holds water better.  Cuttings or seeds from plants that need really good drainage get a 50/50 MP and sand mix and so on.  I don't add fertiliser to seeds being sown but feed later with a liquid feed if it is stuff staying in pots for a while  :)
