Lardman, you might find this one easier - apple slab pie HERE  For the pastry, I substituted all butter for half butter, half lard, and did an egg white wash for the top crust. For filling I added more apples and no nutmeg or allspice. didn't do the sweet glaze on top -too sugary for me. It turned out fab, and I was lucky enough to get 2 small slices before the family hogs finished it off.   

Here's another one in need of custard, not so much to cover the taste but to improve aesthetics. 

I've had a request for some shortbread for the winter festival - a quick search brought up this Hamstergberts shortbread biscuit didn't look too complex - but compare the results.  Guessing the oven was too hot and too much butter caused them to slump ?
