Growing Stocks
« on: May 08, 2013, 08:18 »
I have grown stocks this year for the first time from seed sown about 10 weeks ago ago. So far they all came up and I have potted them on. The thing is they never seem to get any bigger than they did after first coming up. Are they slow growing or is this unusual (well , usual for me as everything I grow seems to slow right down ;-)

Any tips for growing these would be appreciated. My wife likes the flowers which are always expensive in the shops.

74 people have looked at it and not known the answer - apart from trying a weak liquid food there's not much you can do.

I didn't mean that they should have known!

They didn't know and neither do I - but the weak feed may just help, or it might not  ::)

Pending on what sort of stock they are. It sounds to me like they are a Brompton stock which is bi-annual. That means you plant them out where they are to bloom which will be next year.A bit like a wallflower.
If they are10 week stocks they usually flower about August. With the strange weather we've been having don't be in to much  of a hurry to put them out. How big are they. I wouldn't plant them out till they are about 4-5 inches high.

The big bloomy stocks, I basically ignore them bar a bit of liquid flower feed if I'm feeding all the flowers. They get a dollop of manure compost in the planting hole when they go out.
Now the night-scented stocks, we just sprinkle seeds liberally in pots and leave well alone. :D They flower the same year.

Basic planting care I think, lots of manurey-stuff and a bit of feed. :)

Thanks folks. They are about a cm in diameter and about as high. They are in good health if slightly yellower. I thought they flower the same year as it says on the packet. They are lovely when in flower with a stunning scent.

I'm in the same position with my stocks that I'd sown in feb. and they are only about 1 1/2 inch high ::)
