Does growing long carrots in pipes work? Do they get to a good length?

I believe this is how carrots are grown for show purposes

Sunny's right, I think that is one of the methods used for exhibition carrots.  Once I also tried cutting the top and bottoms off of 2 litre lemonade bottles and trying parsnips.

Don't know if it would have worked as none of them even germinated!  :(

Hi Guys,
I'm sorry but new to this site, and don't know how to post a topic or question!! (any advice would be welcome  ::)

But while I am here!!, I have been reading the suggestions and tips on growing long carrots in tubs and pipes, and it says to feed from the top then later from the bottom! so my question is,

Does this mean the sand filled barrel / planter that contains the tubes/bore holes, has holes in the bottom? as in the article from Tim it says the barrels are generally stood on breeze blocks or scaffold boards. In which case how are the bores watered from the bottom?

It all sounded quite straight forward till then!

Thanks to all for any help and what a great site.  :D

I know a guy on our site tried this one year nd ad to cut the pipes to remove the carrots as they had grown and expanded so large.

The shape doesn't mater when its choped up in a soup!!
