We own a small area, maybe half an acre, of natural woodland at the back of us. It contains maybe 20 separate bluebell plants that I planted as bulbs a couple of years ago.I'd like to massively increase the stock but the price of bulbs is quite horrendous. I notice that seed is dirt cheap. Does anyone have any advice on using seed? Do you germinate in trays and then plant out when each plant has reached bulb stage, or do you simply create a good bare earth tilth and sow it direct?

If the way wild seed sows itself and germinates, I would think it would be a very good way of rapidly increasing your plants. Buying from a reputable source to ensure they are genuine English Bluebells is something I guess you would do anyway.
Just one other thought: the seeds do need Winter to break their dormancy, and it does take several years before plants are large enough to flower
