cleft palate in labrador puppy
« on: August 17, 2009, 12:51 »
has anyone raised a puppy with a cleft palete. i went to see one yesterday he is 6 weeks old and about 1 third of the other puppies size. i know he needs to be feed water with a syringe for a while and needs extra help. the vets around here think they should be put to sleep but i have read loads of stuff in america about puppies doing ok without any surgery. has anyone got any experience with these type of puppies.

I would think it depends on the severity of condition. So a dog with a small cleft might do well and need no or minor surgery but another may need surgery or not be able to cope at all. If he's made it to six weeks that's probably a good sign but that he's so much smaller means he's probably not getting enough nutrition. I would think you'd need to see a specialist to know either way, general vets probably don't see enough of something like that.

I'd be concerned also, that he's so much smaller than the rest. That alone says a lot, unless he was also born a runt?
A lot also depends upon whether it is a hairline or wider crack? As he gets older, it will only widen.

As Tam suggests, I'd seek specialist advice too and take the pup for a prognosis.

I once tube-fed a cleft palate/hare lip pup but would never do it again. He did live for 3 years or so, but was always very small and suffered several ailments throughout his little life. It proved not kind that I'd saved him.

Any since were PTS at birth to save a nasty death later, it can often prove a kindness  :(

Saying that, best of luck to you, hope he's not too badly afflicted and that he can live a normal, healthy life  ;)

just to update you, he comes home later on today, his gap is really small at the moment that why it was missed at his first check up at 2 days old. it looks like a fine line at the moment and he has no other problems. thanks for all you help, but i think he needs a chance, i am a veterinary nurse so i wouldnt let him suffer. we will just have to see how it goes.

just to let you know, buttons was doing really well and manages to put on 3 kg and we were managing his cleft pallate. Then he developed a major heart problem and after a lot of treatment for his heart condition we couldnt save him. i think he was a wonderful puppy and deserved a quality of life however short.

Sorry to hear about buttons - you gave him a wonderful life
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

So sorry, animal mad  :(  Despite my personal misgivings I've been rooting for the little guy.

So sorry you lost him, he was beautiful. How heartbreaking  :(  Cleft palate can come bundled with other problems, often hidden until the pup gets older.

I am so sorry, he was a gorgeous boy and you did your best for him. He had a lovely little life, but I know that's no comfort - the happier they are the longer you want them to stay and enjoy it  :(

BIG hugs to you for trying, you gave him a chance and a lot of happiness & love xxxxx
