AKA - the year in review!

I should think we're all in a position now to say what's been hot & what's not, so what's worked for you & what hasn't? Lets not make it a review of every crop you've grown, but, say the top & bottom three.

My top three -

Carrots - defeated the dreaded root fly at last, wonderful crop.
Celeriac - Full marks at first attempt
Peas - Freezer's packed full of peas that actually have taste.

Bottom three -

Sprouts - Damn this crop rotation business, dropped on a patch with club root this year. About 6 decent plants out of 30.
Red Cabbage - Ditto
Swede - Definately my final attempt to grow them. Everyone else has given up also.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My top three would have to be

Courgettes - yes I know I moaned at the time, but they were brilliant
Carrots - blummin marvellous
Parsnips - 3 foot long, chubby and not a sign of pest, bug or damage

My bottom three would have to be

Peas - four pods do not a crop maketh!
Cucumbers - 2 plants, 3 cues!
Pears - not even a single ruddy blossom (but it is it's first so I was being ambitious!)

mmmmm, worst year in 4 for me.
More due to the combined hot June/July and not having the time to water.
New tats Top Crop  :D
Courgettes Tops  :D
Chard Still top crop.  :D

Main crop spuds, not tops to small  :(
Onions Fly attacked them

Beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, beetroot and nearly everything else apart from weeds was killed by the hot dry conditions.
I have never seen the ground like it for years, we are very sandy and the was no sign of moist soil for at least 7 inches down it was like a desert. still got a wonderfull tan.
Yep this was my worst year yet, but the winter/spring stuff is coming on a treat.

My top 3 for 2006 (all because i've never succeeded in getting a crop of these till now, in spite many years of trying):-
 :D Cauliflowers
 :D Aubergines
 :D Melons

Bottom three:-
:( Brussels sprouts (labelling and more pampering should solve this as I had been getting quite good with these)
:( Onions (sets planted out too late and not watered)
 :( Parsnips (sown too late)

Roll on next year!
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

Top 3

Early potatoes
Tomatoes
Beetroot - I've never managed to grow these before
Swiss chard - always brilliant
Salad leaves - I have an absolute garden full; planted mid september ish (can't remember now)
Climbing French beans - started in June, still just about producing.
Figs - the third crop on next door's tree is just ripe. mmmmm

Bottom 3

Runner beans - didn't crop until October iirc
Leeks - the wild tomatoes grew over the top of them and I didn't have the heart to pull them out.  The leeks are accordingly pencil thin, still.
Spring Cabbages - I have just two left.  Grrr.  Last year I had about 60 of them; the pigeons loved me.

Been a mixed year for me too

Broad beans, runners and French beans - more than I needed
Sweetcorn were wonderful
Pumpkins - aimed to grow 4 or 5 and ended up with 13 nice ones, not giants but decent sized and edible.

Brassicas - oops (shame shame)
Onions got a disease so bit of a downer there
Squash - butternuts planted between the sweetcorn resulted in no squash at all :(

And I've got 2 greenhouses :) :)

top 3
I wish !!!
All in the green house

Cucumber (best by far)
Aubergines only fair
tomatoes

Bottom 3

spring onions
beetroot
sweed (did not even come up!)

Very dry year, and our soil like Aidy is very sandy as well. Ploughing in loads of mustard to try and add some humus. Also will be raiding the beach after the winter storms for sea weed. Infact in 4 years we have only had a a few good crops. Onions, shallots, squash and one crop of parsnips. Weeds, slugs, catipillars dry weather are all things we are learning to deal with. This year ?? who Knows.

cabbages are my tops , had spring cabbages at a metre across ( cow manure ) summer primo 3lbs in wieght ( cow manure sulphate of ammonia ,sulphate of potash ) onions to a 1/2 lb each ( potash again) taters absolutly the best  11lbs to a container grown one . a little thing for my grand daughter  ,definatly going to be done again this next year .my failure due to drought has been my late storing onions the real dry weather has made them sprout mould and fungus , the tops sprouting again basically wasted unless i use them quickly as i may pickling them in with cucumber
still alive /............

My top three

tomatoes -

they were wonderful and we only just finished eating our last fresh tomato last week  :(  still we have a freezer full of passata etc so thats good.

Sweetcorn -

I just LOVED them, first year I ever tried growing them and it was fabulous

Dwarf french beans -

especially the dark purple ones, I loved them so much and the kids muched through them without a problem

Bottom Three

Cauliflower -
had only one decent head from about 20 plants the rest just went funny!

Broccoli -

All I succeeded in doing was producing lovely sturdy plants that went from no head to flowers!! - plenty for the compost though  :(

Turnips -

Didnt do anything once I put them in the ground, just shrivelled and died.
Will need to think about what went wrong there  :?

Still roll on next year.... already got plans afoot :D

Mmmm....
Top three:
Rocket - lovely!
Lettuce - cut and come again types, but I still need to get better at sowing THINLY!
Potatoes - Pink Fir  Apples; just digging them now, and so far so very good!

Bottom three:
Peas -   too dry. We did get some, but the plants were so small and weak they just kind of fizzled out.
Climbing beans - well, to be fair, the ONE plant that survived the slugs (of several attempts) climbed up the poles and produced several beans.
Raspberries - I had to start a new patch last year, but a lot of the canes failed and crops weren't that special.  Bung on a load of manure and hope for better next year!
Would-be organic but still learning!

Top: Celery (first time), asparagus (4th year now, really coming into its own), main crop potatos, leeks.

Bottom: Peas (got back less then I planted), carrots (none edible), pears (none - second year in a row), onions (none).

Quite a good striking rate for me. I didn't water at all so that explains some of the problems I had. I do not bother with brassicas at all, have never managed to grow any.
