chickens on concrete?
« on: December 24, 2011, 14:35 »
hi after many months without chickens (mine got attacked by a fox) I have decided I cant live without them so have decided to get some more. Unfortunately I have rearranged our garden so they only place they will be fox proof would have a concrete base. I am aiming to put loads of woodchippings on this for them to scratch about in. Would this be suitable as I my husband says it would be no good for them on concrete and need dirt. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks

That would be fine for them and it would keep them safe.

concrete base is ok. I have a patio area where they have access to some old garden tubs filled with compost. They love digging in there looking for worms etc. maybe you could put some in the run.

Hi

Mine are on flags with a big dirt box. Easy to keep clean and foxes away. It can give rats a home under it though.

The only problem I found with keeping them on slabs, even though I picked their mess up everyday, was after a while they started to smell & had to give the slabs a scrub with Jayes Fluid & a hose down once a fortnight. Wasn't a major problem, but had to wait for them to go to bed in the evening before I could do it.
I also had a dirt box in there which was about 8 inches deep for them to dig about in. I used to add worms to it when I found them & through the odd snail in  :D
