Mystery self set thing
« on: November 20, 2014, 07:15 »
I inherited my current allotment at the end of May this year, while clearing out one of the netted areas came across these, I'm assuming they were self-set from a previous years plantings.

As they looked like "something" I left them to grow.

Anyone have any idea what it might be, no sign of flowers yet, still growing, currently some over 1meter high.

I'm hoping it's some kind of broccoli.

Cheers John

It's definitely a brassica  :). Could be sprouting brocolli or spring cabbage. Have you checked the stem for sprouts. They look like they haven't been thinned out whatever they are & it's too late now. At the worst you should be able to harvest some tasty leaves :)

Well certainly brassicas, John, but I'm not expert enough to guess which! Taking a wild guess, since they're growing tall, broccoli or sprouts would be my guess. Either way you have some good green for the winter. As far as I know, all of the usual brassica greens are edible. I love 'em! Always eat the tops of turnip, sprouts, cauli, broccoli, etc.

They might be the rest of a seed bed, John. The previous gardener might have used them to bring on plants, and didn't use them all!

Like Snowdrops says, they should be lovely leaves for steaming, and you may even get a surprise with some purple sprouting broccoli come Spring...

The more blue looking ones are the broccoli.
They will probably need a bird net over Winter

Looking at the way the leaves thin out at the bottom of their stems, they look like broccoli.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I think you may have a mix there, but that one looks all the world like a brussels sprout with it's rounder leaves.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
