Potato Forks?
« on: May 28, 2018, 11:37 »
Potato forks? What is the best to buy?
Is it best to go for the multi-pronged type or a wide-tined 4 prong type?

Any suggestions welcomed

I use a 4-pronged digging fork which has flattened rather than round prongs - it's not a specialised potato fork but it does increase the chances of lifting rather than damaging them (there's no tool I know of which will stop you spearing straight through the middle of the best spud on every other plant though! )

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

We have a very similar one to JayG, (a gift from New Shoot some years ago  :D )and Mr S swears it is the best fork he has ever used

PS He does still spear potatoes though

With ref the multi tine forks that are refered to as Potato forks,  they are really for loading potatoes ie; shovelling them up rather than for digging them up.    A potato digging fork would usually be a 4 tine fork with wide tines that are flat at the front and "diamond" at the back with a good curve to the tines to get behind and under the root of potatoes.

The digging fork in the Fiskars range has just this type of fork head and has proved to be very sturdy although the company regular changes their handle designs and I haven't used their current style.
