8 month old hen with pale comb - advice please
« on: November 27, 2013, 15:29 »
Hello, can somebody help me please? One of my hens is poorly. She is about 8 months old and her comb is very pale. She is very quiet, still and her poo's are very runny, she is drinking a lot and I have also bought some tonic for her. This morning her comb seemed brighter, however within the hr it had turned pale again. I have had her in house during the day and in the coop at night with the other hens. Any advise? thanks FF x

Is she eating ok
Have your flock been wormed recently with Flubenvet
Have you checked for red mite
Could she have eaten something toxic

Someone with more knowledge will be along soon to give advice.

Look at  all the birds for lice, look for yellow crawling animals smaller than a grain of rice. Look under wings, belly, vent area and neck.
Check for red mite in the house, a piece of white paper slid into cracks and ends of perches...if red streaks the I recommend diatom slurry (receipe on poultry section).
Check temperature with hand under wings of all birds, is it similar?
Check for broken egg by vasaline finger and gently insert into vent.
How are the others treating her?

Thank you both for the replies. Yes the flock have all been wormed with Harkers, the other hens are fine and are treating her well. I clean the coop out every week and use Jeyes fluid. I have also used mite powder when the coop has been cleaned. She is not eating very much and feels very light, she has lost a lot of weight.  I have just checked her temperature and she does feel cold compared to the others. She has not started laying yet, should I still check for a broken egg? Her poos have been different, once it was very runny and the others have been lime green, tan brown which looks like the pictures of ceacel. Further advice welcome FF

might be useful to quarantine her inside in a box.
Do her eyes look gungy, weepy. Is her beak vents clear? Is she breathing fine?

What is Harkers? Is it a licensed product for worming? :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

I use harkers (liquid wormer) for our aviary birds as it is for aviary birds / pigeons.  It is for the treatment of round worm and hairworm

I dont use it for our chickens.

I very much doubt it is suitable for chickens as it only states it is suitable for pigeons and aviary birds for the purpose of exhibition and racing (rather than for human consumption)

I use Marriages Layers Pellets with Flubenvet. My girls quite happily eat it and it seems to do the trick. It's certainly a lot less faff than mixing the Flubenvet powder into the feed and trying to guesstimate the quantities for a flock of only 4 birds. It might be a bit dearer (I think I paid about £6 or 7 for a 10kg bag) but saves a lot of time and, most importantly, I know that each bird is getting the correct dose. It treats gapeworm, large roundworm, caecal worm, hairworm and gizzard worm so is very comprehensive.
