Comfrey Tea
« on: October 07, 2012, 20:49 »
I have just got a barrel which will hold 160 litres  of water.  I want to use it for my comfrey tea.  Is there any guidance of comfrey plants to water ratio, or do you just put in what you can?  I don't want to over dilute it.

Thanks.

I made mine on the advice from a neighbour which is: a bucket full of comfrey, cover with water and use as 1:10 mix with water. You'll know when it is ready which is usually in a couple of weeks by the breakdown of the comfrey and a black tea.

You'll only need the bottom part of your barrel  ;)

The stench. It's an "acquired" smell.  :nowink:

personally i put the leaves in a barrel and cover to stop water getting in.when its rotted you have comrey tea concentrate which i pour into old 5 litre containers ( which are old screenwash containers etc).
then i have a store to use when required , i roughly water this down 10:1

werks for me!

also, doing it this way u dont get the offensive pong!

I use an old water butt, stuff the comfrey leaves into things like the onion storage bags you buy from garden centers/online or old tights and hang them in the butt. After a few weeks place watering can under tap and use as it comes. At end of year pull the bags out and dump contents into compost bin.

No water is the way to go.  The less water the easier storage.

Comfrey liquor may be a better name.

Just a quick question about my new patch of comfrey..  I planted comfrey that I dug up around the site about 10 weeks ago and its grown to about 18" high. Obviously its going to die back soon for winter... Do you reckon I could give it a cut now to load my compost bins at home? Just wondering if it will set it back although it is such a prolific plant I doubt anything would set it back!!

What do you guys reckon??

I would let it die back naturally this time to let it build up for next year just like you would for a favoured plant.
