« on: April 21, 2012, 18:34 »
When I bought all my hens the breeder clipped one of their beaks (cant remember which one) but I have an ancona whoose top beak is over her bottom beak  Can I clip it with the same specialist clippers I use for my dogs claws???

Watch out, one of them, cant remember if its the top or bottom beak, has a main blood vessel in it, if you clip the wrong one it could bleed to death, have a look on utube and see how to do it correctly
If Its Not Growing... Its Dead.

If your bird has a beak problem I would take it to the vet as it's not something you should be messing with if you don't know what you're doing. The bird will suffer if you make a blunder

One of my hens had a deformed beak which would suddenly have a growth spurt and go mad, so she was trimmed properly at the vets.  Clipped expertly and then the rough bits were smoothed off and she'd come out looking beautiful and very happy.  It cost me £10.  I thought the money was well spent, just for my peace of mind alone  :D

we have only had chooks for about four weeks, the person we bought them from was going to trim beak of our leghorn cockerell but it got forgotten when talking about wing clipping.  I help Eric the cockerell while my husband trimmed his beak using human nail clippers.  It proved to be quite easy.  But certainly easier with 2 people.  good luck

You have to be careful though with beak trimming.  I do our turkeys with the dog nail clippers, but you have to just gently take off little bits until you get the feel for where the 'quick' is.  On turkeys, its less than a third of the beak, but turkeys have 3 bands on their beaks which makes it a bit easier to see.

Saying that though I still get a few where the beak bleeds a little, and if you get any blood on the bird's body, the others will peck at it and could cause problems.

So I'm not saying don't do it, just be careful if you do!   :)
