Does anyone grow winter lettuce?
« on: October 12, 2007, 11:35 »
Does it work?
I have set some seeds of 'year round' lettuce from a multi pack from Wilkos, they have germinated  in a seed tray and look fine.. will they grow? I have put some in a shady bed and some in a £ shop  mini polytunnel with plenty of sllug pellects down.. am I wasting my time or have people succesfully grown lettuce at this time of year?
If it fails I shall use the space for some winter  shallots and more garlic.. (I think I will be giving you a run for your money WG!!)

Did it last year in the greenhouse, it was ok but you really have to be careful as moulds hit them big time, didnt think it was worth the effort as we dont eat much salad in winter.

I do winter lettuce every year, louby, and the are good.  Two things only:
1- winter means it over winters, as with other crops, so you need to sow in September-ish
2- variety, funnily enough, I think all year round is not suitable for winter, very good is Parella

So cover them up a bit.

 Doubt it     I have planted almost 5kg this morning.  Only another 70kg to go.  :?

BTW, plant the garlic AND the lettuce (between the drills).  You'll get away with it, I think.

Approx 20 bulbs (5 or 6 cloves each bulb) of porcelain seed to the kilo.

in a new line between the lettuce  rows - but only if you are not covering them.  Garlic doesn't like being covered, IME.
