Silly pea question???
« on: June 20, 2017, 16:49 »
It's probably a silly question, but is there a proven way of telling/knowing whether the peas are ready for picking, other than experience, (which I don't have yet.!). The bottom leaves of one or two of my peas are starting to go yellow, indicating to me that they have about done growing, but the peas, (the ones which I picked, only two pods), taste a bit dry to me. oops pressed the wrong button. Over to you DD. (please)

When the pods become fat instead of flat they should be ready. Open a pod and see if the peas are filling the pod.

If the outside of the pods become dry and wrinkled instead of smooth and waxy they are getting old and past their best.

Yours sound as though they may be running out of water.

I find looking through a pod in bright sunlight enables me to see the size of the peas and stops me picking pods that have peas the size of match heads

And in this weather, yes, they need a good soak a couple of times a week to swell up the peas nicely

If they look full, but the side of the pod "gives"with a gentle squeeze, they are not ready. When you're used to it, the weight of the pea in your hand will tell you, but don't let the pods start to loose their fresh green look.

I've got some Victorian Purple Podded climbing peas this year which have an inbuilt indicator. The side of the pod starts to go green, pretty reminiscent of the tester you get on a Duracell battery!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

DD., do these "Purple Podded"climbing peas have green or purple peas, if green are they commercially available, and are they tasty, (if fact, what are, in your opinion, the tastiest of peas). Oh yes, and how high do they grow please. I've done the stringing on my second row, and much easier it is too, thank you. We live and learn, (well I seem to be always doing so, anyway). Thank you again. arh.
