Jackdaws...
« on: May 13, 2018, 06:33 »
We're plagued by several of these evil birds, who live in the church tower nearby.

They scoff all the bird food from the table and fatball machine and terrorise some of the smaller birds too - especially as we have a few blackbird chicks hopping around!

We've got some of the RSPB nut feeders and also a seed feeder, but somehow they gulp down everything else on display!

What do others here do to deter them please?

Laugh at them!  They hate it ....

I make scary noisies and they ignore me.  I wave my arms around and they give me a beady look ... but laugh at them and they leave in a huff.  Like cats ....  ::)  The problem is I dont have all day from dawn to keep an eye out for them.   >:(

I like 'em ! :)
Used to have a pet one as a lad !
Can call one of the local daws to the bird table from several gardens away ! :)
They can be gluttons on the bird table  but i now only feed in hard weather .
The term evil* i reserve (wrongly) for the carrion crows , magpies and black backed gulls.

Daws are saints compared to the local gulls.

*wild animals are rarely evil, just not living to our rules.
Ps
How many gulls would you like me to send to solve your jackdaw problem?
Got lots !

I'll try laughing Madat - better than running outside every ten minutes! The dog goes berserk...

8, They have that evil eye; one or tow is fine but a whole gang makes the garden go dark! Agree about gulls though, they only get as far as here when the sea's rough! Used to congregate on the church roof and nick the bread for the ducks as well...

I thought it was only magpies that did that Mrs B!

Did some work on the roof last year and one of the pair of daws i suspect are nesting in a neighbours chimney would sit on the scaffold handrail a metre away from me and watch what i was doing in his/her territory.
Very bold and intelligent , and tamable if you get them young !
My uncle had a young daw i did not know about until i visited and it jumped off it's cage in a dark room landed on my shoulder and cawed !
Nearly pooped i did ! :)
