Geraniums... 5th year now
« on: September 30, 2006, 21:21 »
Just been to visit my old neighbours.... they still have the tub of geraniums I grew from seed 5 years ago, still the original plants... and they got snowed on while I had them.... I have cuttings to take back to Spain with me :D
Don't know the name of the flower other than geranium and it has a pink flower and is not a trailing geranium :)

Almost certainly pelargonium, not geranium.  They do withstand some degrees of frost.

Start em off in 50% peat 50% hort sand, don't suppose temps to much of a problem for you about 70 f or so   lightly cover with the same cover with plastic to keep moist keep out of the sun else they will fry.

They can be susceptible to dampening off. So if you can, plunge water for a start until you see moisture on the surface of the compost. Can you get cheshunt compound ? this stops dampening off disease and other fungi etc water the compost with this before you put in the seeds leave for a while to drain, then sow.

Bit higgldy piggldy soz

Don't think so but you could make something similar if you can get hold of a few copper sulphate crystals and dissolve in water, make it a weak blue colour that may do, but it's a bit trial and error

Pelargoniuims hate moist air. So probably will germinate and grow better without covering. Geraniums are also easy, the hardest part is catching the seeds. Geranium palmatum would grow well in spain and has BIG sprays of pink flowers, nicer than any pelargonium in my opinion..

Up to a few years ago I used to dismiss pelagoniums as boring old people's plants. Then I grew some with my class at school and brought them home during the summer hols. They flowered beautifully all summer long and I took cuttings from them. They survived winter in my unheated greenhouse and the following year flowered all summer long, well into the Autumn. I've repeated this every year since and this year despite the rain they are giving a lovely display. I'm a total convert
