Moving Raspberry canes.
« on: July 13, 2010, 16:51 »
Hi,

I have recently taken on an allotment and so far I have fenced it off all around it and i have an inner fence spliiting the allotment in two.

The bottom half is for my hens and the top half will be my vegetable patch.

In the vegetable part I was lucky to inherit about 40 + raspberry canes which are now in full fruit and delicious.

The problem I have is that they are all bunched together right in the middle of my plot so I will need to move them if I want to make the most of the land.

I am just looking for some advice regarding moving them I believe I after fruiting I cut them down to just above ground level is this correct ?? and also is it best when I move them to kepp them bunched together or can I spread them out and use them to line the fencing ?

any other advice re digging them up moving them would be greatly appreciated,

thank you

Sarah

If they are in full fruit now, it would appear you have summer fruiting ones, (yes, really). You need to ONLY cut off the canes that have fruited this year, as the new canes will bear next year's fruit.

You can move them late autumn once dormant and spread them out.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

you could use them to line the fencing like I've done but I've followed advice off here and made sure I can get down between the fence and the canes to pick every fruit

Make sure you dig out every bit of root when moving them otherwise you will get raspberry suckers appearing in the middle of your veg next year! (It's not too difficult fortunately as they are quite shallow-rooted!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
