Moving a bay tree?
« on: November 11, 2010, 11:16 »
My new plot neighbour wants to move a six foot bay tree, as it shades light off her shed windows. Is this advisable, and, if so when is the best time?

Im not sure if its advisable but the best time to move would probably be now ish, as it will be getting ready to be dormant through winter :)

How old is the tree?

My bay is probably about 10 years old and 6' high but has been kept to that height by annual pruning, however the main trunk continues to thicken and I doubt whether it would be very easy to get it out with a decent rootball now.

If your neighbour's tree is younger than this you are more likely to get away with it.

Is it not possible to drastically shorten it? Bay seems to survive quite drastic pruning and soon recovers its good looks!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Bay-trees are virtually unkillable: you can cut it down to the ground, pull out the stump, let it dry in the sun for a week, and it will still shoot up like a rocket when replanted

Bay do put up with a lot, but they hate being moved.  Keep as much of the root ball as you can, plant to the depth it is now, and keep well watered.

It will probably look very sorry for itself next year, but it will recover.

I think it’s not advisable to move a bay tree. But if you want to move the tree, best time to move this tree is December.
