Cosmos seedlings
« on: April 28, 2016, 22:48 »
I have seen one post on here about pinching out Cosmos seedlings, but it hasn't answered my question as far as I can see.
My Cosmos are leggy, like many others.  I was going to pinch them out,  but how far back can I pinch them?  The first and second sets of true leaves are so close together I'm not sure that it will help my situation to pinch them here.   Can you pinch them below the first true leaves?   Or am I better potting them on,  deeper,  almost up to the first 'baby' leaves?

Thanks in advance!

I think if you pinch the out below the first true leaves, you may finish them off, but I haven't tried planting them deep either.

Lots of other plants do cope with deep planting, so maybe try a few and see if they cope with it  :)

I've planted them deeper, it seemed to work.

Mine were a bit leggy last year and so I planted them half way up the stem. They grew into massive plants and planting them more deeply  stopped them tipping over I think!

I agree that planting deep is fine for cosmos. I do this and I also pinch them out a little.

Was going to ask same, mine are so leggy some have flopped over. Will plant them deep. Sowed the new yellowish cosmos and pink in same tray with a divide between, silly me forgot to put the labels in. Will have to wait till flowers appear to know which they are.

I just planted a dozen dwarf cosmos yesterday...........they have been in a cold greenhouse up until then..Good light so not leggy. Wondering if they are targets for slugs and snails...............
I was going to ( and still might) interplant them with dwarf zinnia and perhaps even some strawflowers ( or everlasting flowers as they are also called )
