I usually plant the winter hardy shallots and also garlic in late October as I think the cold weather over winter helps them to plump up better the next year.

Shallots sets can be planted anytime between November and mid-March, except when the soil is actually frozen solid. I think it helps if they can get their roots down before hard winter weather arrives, as they get a better start in spring, but you need well drained soil for autumn planting. On heavy cold soils it may be better to plant your sets in early spring.
Saying that mine aren't even scheduled for delivery until the end of January  ::) (I didn't notice that when I ordered  :blush:)
Traditionally, sets were planted on the shortest day of the year and harvested on the longest .

I put Jermor and Golden Gourmet in at the end of September, really early! They're sprouting well but I worry they might get damaged in high winds...
