Sloes
« on: September 03, 2013, 08:00 »
Saw loads of sloes tonight when I was getting blackberries. Is now the time to pick them ? I don't drink but fancy some sloe jam or some thing maybe. They look so tasty with the nice blue tinge to them

I have read about the frosts but the problem is we might not get one for ages and they will be long gone. If you said wait until they had a good soaking that would be different :)

Last couple of years here we have had to pick early and trick them by putting them in the freezer. I dont drink but we do make sloe and apple jelly  :D

I pick when ready and freeze them , remove from freezer and let them thaw naturally and they split just nice for Gin , vodka etc

Can't beat a sloe Brandy  :)

One bottle of brandy 70cl   divide in 2 bottles , add a wine glass of sugar to each bottle , top each bottle with pricked sloes.

Seal and turn every day until the sugar as disolved and then once a week thereafter

Sloe-ing is good for changing spirits you do not like into something very drinkable !
Whisky does not taste like whisky.
White Rum , poteen  and many others can be transmogrified by sloe liqueuring ! :)

Completely true - I loathe gin but love sloe gin! Still a bit early to pick though I think, unless you then freeze them (have only just used up the ones in the freezer from last year  :)).
