Growing where chicken run has been.
« on: January 09, 2019, 20:26 »
Hi everyone,
I have just taken on a new allotment. There is a 20' x 15' peice of ground where a chicken run has been for the past three years. Will it be too hot in terms of lime from the chicken manure for growing this year?

Thanks in advance.
Steve.

How long ago did the chickens vacate?

If immediately then yeah, maybe use that bit as your mulch heap this year.

If a few months then i'd say a good dig over and you're good to go, but not carrots.

a rested piece of ground and all that chicken manure equals fantastic crops in my opinion.

Many thanks for your reply. The chickens are still on it and will be gone in about three weeks. Will do as you suggest.

It may well be rich in nitrogen so bear that in mind when adding feed.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
