EWWWW Any idea what on earth this is ?
« on: February 26, 2015, 08:42 »
opened the chooks up this morning and there was blood all over the pearch

one of my girls whom I don't handle often had blood on her legs - upon inspection found this bubble on her breast bone flesh  ??? never seen anything like it before - it is covered in dry blood so its obviously burst in the night

It is possible that she got a cut and that it turned into a boil - might be a good idea to take her to the vets to get some antibiotics.

Some of our girls used to get that when they were sleeping on their perches.  The turkeys used to as well on the occasion that we tried them on a perch.

It would be like a boil, that bursts if you don't find it in time, and can bleed.  You'll have to be careful with the other hens.  If they see the blood, they may start pecking at it and injure her more or worse.

I used to use the purple spray.  The one we used was called Naf (what a name for something that works!)  or the really smelly brown one, but can't think of the name for the minute.  smells awful and doesn't look very nice as it really stains, but it keeps the others away until it can heal.

Hope she's okay!

She's a bit quite today , she is eating and been in the field for a scratch with the others , but her comb is pale
I was thinking maybe its due to blood loss , ( there was lots of it !!! )

do you think it needs lancing or will it go down now its bleed so much , I can't see any pus

Ideally she should see a vet as she may need antibiotics :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

she seems bright enough today - no change in her usual self

wound looks clean with no pus - no bullying either , so just keeping an eye on things for now

Just in case you get another one.... don't lance it. Chooks don't have a lot of blood to begin with and lancing it would make it bleed, also it could introduce an infection, better to keep it sealed. Glad she's getting better.

well the second one has burst !!!!! its like a scene from Sweeny Todd !!!! in the hen house

I kept her in over night as it was cold and she seems fine - a bit pale but ok , I can't see any more so hopefully that's it over with

I have been putting her in the nest box so her breast bone can't rub on the perch and cause any more
