Bought mine end of Jan. At home they started to sprout so I shoved them in the fridge. On 11th March I put them in a seed tray in compost in the greenhouse. The idea was to get a root growth before planting out. Looked today and it has worked. Will be planting out during the next few days.

I put mine straight into the ground 3 days after that and they are all well rooted and anchored now.

Is it worth that faffing about, I wonder?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I need to buy some! - Tried seed this year, but it is such a faff and takes up so much room in my mini greenhouse - lesson learnt!!  I will get some sets because I presume the seed onions will take much longer to mature.

Depends if the ground is ready perhaps?

My soil is heavy, and I struggle to get anything into it until about now, so everything goes into pots.  Well, I did get Garlic in, we had a day in February where the land was dry enough, but that was a bit of a miracle - of course if I had been alert last Autumn I would have got it planted then ...

But my beds are now all prepared and looking smart <SmugGrin>

I got 500 in over the weekend. Will be away this weekend so hope the birds leave them alone!
Last year was my first on this allotment, I grew around 300, lost some to white rot so moved where I planted them. Last years only lasted us until Jan before we ate them all so hope to be almost self sufficient this year.

I guess we all saw Monty Don put his in modules and keep them in a cold frame or greenhouse to give them a good start.  I'll have a go at this next year and would seem a good idea if you are worried about the weather at the moment

I planted half a kilo of Sturon sets on 8th February in clay soil and in the two weeks afterwards we had 5 inches of rain, and the surface panned.                                          But this had no detrimental affect on the sets. All have grown, some now have three leaves and are 4 inches high. Looking good.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?
