Hen not eating
« on: September 16, 2009, 09:02 »
Had my hens yesterday. They are hybrids and were all running around free rangeing when we saw them. We chose 4 of what we thought were healthy looking hens and brought them home in a pet carrier.
We let them into their new home and they went straight for the food and water and rummaged around. About an hour later my gold looking hen was sitting which I thought was ok but she semed to be sitting lots and not eating much.

Anyway they all went to bed without too much hassle and we let them out this morning. All except the gold one have gone straight for the food and water but the gold one is sitting over the other side not eating. Can anyone tell me what might be wrong.

They are not used to being handled but we managed to get the gold one and I checked for mites or lice or any thing that looked suspect but she seemed fine so we let her go. When we tried to get the others to give them a thorough check they were  getting too stressed so we left them.

I am worried that there is something wrong with her yet when she was in the field she seemed fine and that was why I chose her.

Please help.

Hi Ma, thisis the one you were concerned about yesterday isn't it? She could still be a bit out of sorts with the move but if you are still worried, i would ring the breeder and query it. Sorry i cant be more help, good luck :)
We have 17 chickens, 3 quail, 2 dogs, 3 cats and that's enough (for this week)

When you held her did you feel her crop? was it empty, squishy of full and firm? Joyxx
Staffies are softer than you think.

She is probably just stressed by the move, she should soon settle down, but I would give the breeder you got them from a ring and let them know, just in case she doesn't get any better.

If it was empty this morning then that is a good sign. Do you have any meal worms to tempt her with?

Have noticed that her feathers are puffed up a bit when she is sitting does this mean anything?

It could mean something or nothing, if that makes any sense
Have you tried the mealworms yet?

Contact the supplier Ma and tell them about her.  I would take her back and exchange her before the other hens settle too much.  It will be difficult to introduce a new hen if you leave it too long.
