New \chicken
« on: May 19, 2010, 09:03 »
Hi,  Had to buy a replacement chicken at weekend as fox pinched one of the other girls the week before   >:(.

The new girl looked fine when we picked her up.
Gets her home and puts her in pen, Old girld not happy moaning away to herself and has taken a few pecks from new girl but that to be expected.
New girl is just sitting about sleeping, she is drinking and eating.
Tail half way down but she seems unsteady on feet.
Any ideas on what i can do to cheer her up.
No pecking in nest box and sleeping quaters.
Should I just leave her to settle in her own time
Thanks
Adopt a chicken

did you not isolate her for a couple of weeks just incase of infections?
Staffies are softer than you think.

Never have before, We have used this place before and it has been innoculated. She was fine until we got her home.

No sneezing or coughing.
Wondering if maybe she is just stressed out from the journey.

Other people will advise on possible diagnosis.

But I'd get her in, away from the others.  A, because they might pick on her, specially if she's new, and B, she might be contageous.

Might be something just as simple as a soft shell on its way, but not worth risking the others.  If any of mine don't look right, they come in and spend a the night in the utility room where I can keep an eye on them until I'm sure they're OK.

Hope she perks up.

Hello redjane,

I have the same thing at the moment in my coop. Everyone is happy except for one. She does not run up to great like the others, does not get excited over treats etc however is laying fine. Just a moody chicken.
My plan is to let her sort herself out. I regularly go into run and have a chat with her. Let he slowly come over and give her a bit of a stroke. She seems to be coming round a bit, so I would say not to worry, just let her settle in more and give her a bit of attention.

This is a good forum however at times always seems to be doom and gloom, first thought is always some illness that is going to spread through whole flock. Watching my chickens I can see different personalities therefore think that at times they can also be down and a bit moody (especially when just moved in) Give her time and a bit of love, I reckon will be fine.

Without specific symptoms I'd agree the best course is to keep her under observation  for the time being.
