Dead Chick
« on: June 07, 2012, 18:55 »
Hi Peeps,
Let my hen out this morning with her nine mixed chicks that are now 9 days old.
I've just had a phone call from my husband to say that one of the chicks a silver polish as dead in the run.

I ran home and there she was laid out on her own whilst mum and the other chicks had gone to roost.

Does anyone know what may haw gone wrong. This is my first time with chicks and found this so upsetting. Could I have done something wrong? Did she find a bit of her mums feed (that I'm sure I cleared up) and choked?

Did mum accidently kick her against the side of the pen?

Would hate to think it was something I had done !

Mummy hens are quiet dumb i think, she probably got kicked or stood on, my hen sometimes stands on her chicks and i have to push her away, she doesnt move the silly hen.

It is highly unlikely to be anything you have done. Unfortunately, sometimes, these things happen. Don't worry you are doing your very best for them - what more can you do? :(
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Are you feeding chick crums with ACS in it?  Check poos etc, they are at a prime age for coccidiosis, and it can kill within 24 hours.

At 9 days old chicks are still pretty fragile, and with the weather like it is it could have caught a chill with the rain (Polish need special care and housing over an above other breeds because of their topknot and are very susceptible to injury/disease due to getting wet).

Also check the vents of the other chicks to make sure they aren't pasting up.  Getting a chill is one of the main causes of pasting up - though it is less prevalent in naturally reared chicks than with incubator reared chicks.
