i have just recieved some tobacco seeds in the post. i wondered if anybody has any experience of growing there own. i have a virginnian variety and am looking forward to my homegrown baccy. also what are the laws likely to be it would be amusing if H.M customs turn up on my plot  as it is not the usual thing to find.

This page might be of use to you.

It basically says ... yes there's laws regarding duty on homegrown tobacco but frankly they(HM Customs) have better things to do, so unless you're causing a major problem, selling it all around in useable form, it's not likely that they'll waste their time and resources against you.
wistfully hoping to one day be mostly organic gardener in North London.

You could be growing your own worse things to smoke! That would get you into trouble.

well i have started it in a seed tray on the windowsill  and i cant say i'm to worried about customs breaking down my door. and yes there are definatly worse things i could try growing on my plot. me and the girlfriend had a chat last night trying to come up with the most difficult plant to grow on an allotment. we settled for an excellent choice, seaweed.

Tend to agree there.
We came back from a day trip to the seaside once with a load of seaweed in the boot. As the car headed home it began to fill with little flies.
You can try somethings once, especially if you intend to avoid divorce.

well i surface sowed my tobacco seed and have had them on the windowsill and i am most pleased that they are germinating nicely. it is always such a buzz seeing the first signs of life in a new plant. what is amusing about growing this baccy is i fully intend to have given up smoking before this crop will be ready to harvest. it will make good winter solstice gifts for my friends though.

Giving up = LOL

I'm sure I have an old (like 70's  old) article on curing your tobacco - I'll see if I can find it.

I bought tobacco seeds from ebay about 3 yrs ago... i grew them for a yr, then decided it was time to cut the leave and cure them... 5 months in the cellar (airated etc) and they have gone all mildew so wont b trying again.. U r ment to grow for a year or 2 then leave to cure for a year so by that time u might aswell go abroad and buy cheap tobacco lol thats wot i do now
