purple sprouting broccoli
« on: March 13, 2006, 21:14 »
For the first time last year I planted some purple sprouting broccoli.  thought it was  early, but looking at the packet it sayd harvest March.  Well, its 13th March today, and on looking at the patch yet again, i can see 1 small piece of broccoli.  There's lots of leaf growth, but should I be seeing more sproutings by now?  I must admit that I didn't realise they need staking, and some of mine lean over due to the winds over the fens here, but they were sheltered by the runner beans!  OH keeps saying they aren't coming to anything, get rid of them, they are laying over the path, but he doesn't walk down the path, its my path!!!! lol

Is there still hope for them??

Hi grannieannie,

Join the club. I have got the same problem. This time last year I was eating my purple sprouting, this year loads of leaf growth no sprouting. My wife keeps telling me to pull it up, and send it to the compost heap. I want to keep it in situ, I dont need the ground and I am forever hopeful we will get a crop, could it be late because of the weather? I am going to wait for now, yours ever hopeful John

Mine is late too and looking at other forums it seems to be the norm.  My romanesco is great though

Romanescu's are lovely,  OH isn't really keen on cauliflower, but he liked Romanescu.  I grew some last 2 years, but they didn't come to much.  1st year was just a disaster all round as I didn't really have time to tend to my veggies properly.  Last year I think it was because the ground was too soft.  I started to tread it down a bit like Percy Thrower taught me years ago (out of his book, not in person you understand!!! lol) and OH said why are you doing that, we've only just dug this.  So I left the ground soft and all my brassicas grew with no hearts or blown brussels!!!

I'm sure I remember driving past Percy Thrower's nurseries years back.  Did know what he was doing in the garden.  The NVS chaps all reckon loads of lime for brassicas. I've added a bit to the potting compost - just hope it works!
