Repairing an IBC!
« on: August 07, 2011, 18:32 »
Help!  Have just taken over an allotment.  It has a small shed and the rainwater from thle roof is funnelled into an IBC which we have just noticed has developed a slight weep/leak.
The ground underneath was soggy which is how we spotted it.  Does anyone have any ideas how we might be able to patch up the plastic and fix it?

I'm assuming its a plastic IBC, in which case its likely to be made of HDPE. If you find a suitable glue, cement or tape, hopefully you'll be able to mend your leak - depending on its size and position on your tank.

Thanks Argyllie!  Yes it is some sort of plastic - will have a go - there's nothing to lose (we're losing the water already!).

You could also try a fibreglass car body repair kit.  Check compatibility.

Just had a quick look on YouTube and there's an advertising video selling a two part epoxy resin which they say will make repairs. :) Here: repairing HDPE...

As another idea, I collect Lilliput land cottages, and bought some of them cheap at boot fairs as they were damaged.  I bought something called Milliput, which again is a 2 part cementy stuff.  It said it is waterproof, heat proof, cold proof etc.

I used it over a hole in my green water butt and where a leg had come off a chicken drinker and left a nearly inch hole.  Both were watertight, and in fact the water butt is still holding water 3 years later!

I made sure the milliput was spread over the hole at the back as well as the front, but of course, that's a bit harder with an IBC tank! lol
