water fountain bottles
« on: March 02, 2011, 09:12 »
The office next to ours have recently re-located and they have left 12 water fountain bottles (think they are 50litres) would these be any good to use with the bottom removed as cloches in the garden ?
when it comes to age we are all on the same boat.......But some of us  have been on board that that little bit longer

If you saw the bottoms off they make great cloches and the bottoms are good pot saucers for big pots.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

yeah, i use these for this purpose too :-) they're brilliant!
people leave them out for the bins where i live.
also, lots of different kinds of bottles too, which i nab and use for cloches.

Hi I have 4 of these that I want to use but what do you cut them with I tried an ordinary saw but no joy and a Stanley knife and that was useless??
some people are like slinkys......they're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face as you push them down the stairs!!

Starry, you could use a hacksaw, but you need to make a hole in the thing first of course. Why not use an old kitchen knife clouted with something heavy like a shoe?

If you don't have a proper hack saw, can you use just a hacksaw blade, and wrap some material round one end to make a handle? You might even get away with using a bread knife!

If you don't want to bang a hole in it, a hacksaw can sometimes be used by cutting down the bottle from the top, and where you want to start the horizontal cutting, i.e. the eventual bottom of the cloche, just turn the blade slightly with each cut stroke. It should work!
