Sheds - metal or wood, which is best?
« on: June 22, 2007, 16:01 »
Need a shed expert on this :) I am trying to choose a shed!

Seems wood sheds are dearer than metal, and they eventually rot. Metal sheds will, in time, rust. Plastic sheds are petrochemical derived, kind of going against the green ethos. What are the other pros/cons of metal against wood sheds?

Additionally, can you experienced folk please recommend to me a good/reputable place to order a shed?

cheers

I have a metal shed which I bought for cheapness.  It was very complicated to put together but does the job well.  However, surprisingly, they're much lighter than wooden ones and will blow over in a strong wind if not weighted down or fixed to the ground in some way.  Less likely to be torched by vandals, though.

These guys http://www.planwell.co.uk manufacture good metal sheds which are flat-packed for delivery (I believe nationwide).

Don't you get a lot of condensation from a metal shed ?

We used to have a garage with a metal roof and that used to drip more or less constantly in the cooler months.

IMHO wood is the most environmentally friendly option, think of the carbon manufacturing costs of metal.

I expected condensation in my metal shed but it doesn't happen - don't understand why.  However, it gets very hot when closed up in sunny weather but cools down almost instantly when the door is opened.

agree about the carbon footprint though.

Just hope all this rain and sun hasn't made the weeds grow over 6 ft!
