Natural Alternative to Dish Scrubs
« on: March 17, 2007, 19:42 »
Hiya

I was looking on:

http://www.choosethealternative.co.uk/products/scrubby.php

and, apparantly, the 'newest' trend item is the Scrubby, a simple loofah cut down the centre, and into more managable pieces.

So simple I don't know how no one did it before (or did they? lol, I certainly hadn't).

Any one got anymore frugal alternatives for the home / body?

You can use mare's tail as well if your unlucky enough to have it, but it won't be as tough as a loofa.

the Loofah, is a vegetable native to South America. It can be eaten when it is smaller. I have stir fried them but only up to a size of about 4 inches. After that they become tough like an over ripe squash. Left to fully mature and then washed out they mke  an excellent sponge. Seeds for this plant are readily available through vegetable catalogs and you’ll only have to buy seeds your first year- one mature Luffa sponge will produce at least 30 seeds. they come with fuol instructions on how to do them or just search for makinmg a loofah

If you want to be super thrifty, a handful of sand will always work. A bit messy, but it does work and its recyclable.
As for loofahs, they'll grow tall so have a strong, high support for them, or they'll take over the beds.
