Container Gardening
« on: January 13, 2007, 16:29 »
Hello Lads and Lasses
First post from a first time gardener - I am looking to produce some fruit and veg from containers.  I would love to hear your stories re growing stuff in containers: what's been good or bad in the past for you, any pitfalls to avoid, or any advice you could give me would be most welcome.
Thank you in advance, I'm sure from reading this forum that I'll gain some insight into the wonderful world of growing your own!
There's a big difference between kneeling down and bending over.

Wow! :D

Makes my beans look silly, and they were planted in the ground.

I guess watering is the key...looking at the proximity of your butt...so to speak!

 :D

those little round carrots are good also tomatoes and chillis
your right axe you cant let m dry out and the bigger the tub the better.
try mixing a 50/50 top soil/compost mix as neat compost drys out realy quickly.but saying that you dont want it water logged so put plenty of crocks in the bottom.
feed the soil not the plants
organicish
you learn gardening by making mistakes

Although I have a decent size garden I  always grow mixed salad leaves, rocket and flat leaved parsley in containers near the house, due to the mild weather I am still picking from unprotected pots but have just eaten the last of the salad.A courgette plant grows well in a pot and gives enough for 1 person, toms also grow well in pots or tumbling types in hanging baskets, actually once you start the list is endless, the only limitation is what you like and the strength of your watering arm.Let us know how you get on.

if you buy something nowadays  it sometime comes with a ploystyrene box affair well it makes a great container for growing things .also dont look at somethimng without thinking can i grow something in it . a plastic lemonade bottle can be used to grow a runner bean in , just use liquid fertiliser ( home made ) to water once a week . water normally the rest    stack a dosen together on a patio with a lump neytting to let em climb up and you have a lovly flower arrangment and a food counter
