Apple trees and Raspberries
« on: January 10, 2007, 16:31 »
I've got 3 apple trees that are in big pots currently sitting on our patio. We were given them a couple of years ago and apparently they are designed to grow small so they could stay in the pots - however now we have an allotment I would like to replant them in the allotment - they have never done very well in the pots.

Anyway is now a good time to replant them - in theory before they get really going this year or should I leave it until the autumn?

Also I'd like to plant some raspberry canes but have a dim recollection of having read somewhere that they need to be planted out in the autumn - is this a complete figment of my imagination or is it ok to buy some now and plant them.

any advice gratefully received

Many Thanks

Jane

I think it would be fine to plant them both now - assuming your ground isn't frozen!
Dig in plenty of compost as you plant. When you buy rasberries they usually come with advice about pruning etc.
Hope this is useful
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Ground Frozen!!  you've got to be joking - water logged more like - the bit we've dug looks ok but the bit that hasn't been dug has standing water on it!!

If it can stop raining long enough for us to get up there I'll go and plant out the trees.  They've never been staked in the pots - would you advise staking when I put them out in the allotment?

Many thanks for all the advice

one thing you must not do when planting any type of tree is put manure/compost under the root ball, the reason being is the compost/manure will rot down over time causing the tree to sink and the tree will suffer or die,try to bed it on solid ground and put your compost/manure around the sides,
also dig a square hole not a round hole this will help the roots into the sides of the hole(the corners of the hole),if the hole is round the roots just follow the shape of the hole and the tree will take a bit longer to establish
feed the soil not the plants
organicish
you learn gardening by making mistakes

agree with shaun about the manure in the hole .it can also burn the roots  again stalling the growth , * thats twice i agreed with him this year
