When I went to roast my chicken I realised that I had none, so thought I'd lift one and use a 'green' clove, as none of the plants were dying back yet.
Fork underneath to lift one - only to find that the outer skins were splitting as the new cloves were starting to grow  ::) Lifted it all to dry now.

Motto of the story - check to see if yours are read to dry - even if the tops don't look as if they are  ;)

Yes, I took ours out while the leaves were still green for the same reason, and they were certainly ready to come up. Just letting them dry their leaves off before stringing them up, as I thought they moisture in the leaves might lead to some rotting otherwise

Yes I pulled up one row at the weekend as they we starting to die back. Earliest I have harvested garlic! The other row of purple ones (can't remember what I sowed now  :nowink:) will stay a bit longer I think.

Thanks for the tip Mum.  I have got 4 varieties growing and the Germidour were ready when I looked today.  The Messidrome, Printanor and Edenrose haven't split into cloves yet so I will leave them a while longer.

Dug up all my autumn-planted garlic and onions on Sunday, during the Fathers' Day family barbecue at the lottie plot. Probably my best ever crop of these  -  mostly rather large, only very few with any slight signs of white rot. Except for those, which are taken home for immediate use, all are spread out on pallets to dry in the open air, uncovered. Must actually try to plait them this year! Any tips...?
