Plant labels
« on: April 07, 2018, 08:01 »

I have used various pens on white & yellow plastic which all seem to blur or fade after a while.

Anybody have a better way of marking your plants?

I just use the cheapo white labels and write with a pencil, they get cleaned off and used again for a few years before the plastic gets brittle.

we found using a cheap marker pen was a waste of time since we bought a brand names  staedtler and sharpie maker pens not a problem `and artline 70  white marker

there's nothing like marking you labels and after a time there washed away very frustrating  >:(

I was wondering about this myself today because I've been using a pencil on white plastic reusable markers but I noticed today that I have no idea which garlic is which variety because all of this rain has washed the writing off the labels!

I've got one of those label makers but I'm just not happy to use it for this because of the single use, non recyclable nature of it.

Remember to wet your pencil before using it.

What sort of pencil do you use.

I used a charcoal based one on the garlic and a 2b on other things.

I find it difficult to rub off the pencil marks normally with an eraser so I didn't realise it would be so easy for the elements to do that!

I've started using thin strips of wood painted with white gloss. I write on them with a Sharpie (as mentioned above) which is normally good for the year. If there is any writing left going into the next season, a quick slap of paint on top and their ready to go again.

Thank you all for your comments.

After potting & labeling 80+ plants yesterday found the sharpie worked better that others I had been using.

Here's hoping they stay in place.

Many years ago we used to use what were called "Chinagraph" pencils for marking on plastic sleeves when picking stock.  They were wax based and the ticks and crosses never budged until they were removed with an oily substance,  I would guess that something like WD40 would work.  I don't know if they are still available but I'm positive they wouldn't come off in the rain.
