Rat moved into my Compost Bin
« on: January 03, 2018, 22:49 »
Plastic standard Council issue black bin sited on flat bare earth. I never put eggshells in, only kitchen peelings, tea bags, coffee grounds etc. I never put cooked stuff or any meat in the bin.

Any suggestions to get rid of this intruder, please? Dead or alive.

I use an off the shelf rat poison, which you can get at Wilko, B&Q etc. Either put the bait in the middle of a length of drainpipe, laid on the ground and supported by bricks so it doesn't roll.
If you've got some spare bricks, build a little shelter just 1 brick high and totally covered with bricks, with just a 7cm gap in one of the sides, and the bait inside.
Normally works within a couple of days.

I blocked up the route into the bin, made the bin contents wet, and longer term put weldmesh underneath the bin to prevent further access.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

This works!! They don't like living in wet conditions so pouring in a watering can full of water will certainly shift him. Weldmesh under the bin stops further visitors

I tend to agree with pescader good suggestion's to rid yourself of this pest don't forget to wear your gloves when putting down your bate

when I bought  my plastic council bins I thought vermin so I set my bins on concrete slabs and put extra straps on the hatch and as yet had no probs I also tip some buckets of water in the bin occasionally

As above, plus keep mixing it.  I bought a mixer stick just for these dalek bins.  Turn it often to deter the rats.
