Peas...Sow by 2016
« on: December 27, 2017, 11:26 »
I am having a good old sort out and it has come to my attention that all my pea seed are out of date

They all say sow by Dec 2016, there are 3 varieties, Hurst Green Shaft, Kelvedon Wonder, Oregon Sugar Pod, Do you think they will be OK to sow in 2018.

Some will still germinate, but not nearly as many as from fresh seed.
Up to you whether you have the patience to see how many show through, then perhaps need to buy another packet and sow more.. or buy new seed from the outset.

You can always use the out of date ones for peas shoots, as sown really thickly in a tray  you should get enough shoots to make it worthwhile

I have sown out of date pea seeds in the past and been disappointed by the germination rate, so I too suggest you buy new ones.

Exactly what I was going to suggest! We did that with our last few pea seeds last month and had a few shoots which the nipper loved :D

If you put them in a dish on some damp kitchen towel, and cover them also with damp kitchen towel, you will see if they germinate. In fact, I always germinate my pea and bean seeds like this, and sow them when they have a small shoot.
We come from the earth, we return to the earth, and in between we garden.
