Moss
« on: November 23, 2017, 21:05 »
Hello. I live in a damp climate with acidic soil. There is always moss and at this time of the year it's a thick, spongy carpet. I scrape it off because I feel I should, but does it actually do any harm?
I liberally spread wood ash on the beds where I'm planting brassicas etc. and they grow ok. I also fertilise with seaweeds and manure. The soil isn't badly drained and I can't complain generally about the amount I harvest.

I just wonder whether I should be worrying? Any advice or experience welcomed.

There are various types of mosses and am not an expert by any means, but mosses usually grow on wet places or damp soils especially if they're in the shade. Personally I'd continue scraping it off so it doesn't overtake your planting area. Iron sulphate in the form of lawn sand may help to reduce it.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I'm not convinced about applying iron sulphate to soil where you're going to grow veggies.  It is acidic and will change the pH of the soil.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Good point Yorkie! As the soil isn't badly-drained could it be pearlwort rather than moss as they can look similar.

Thank for your replies. Yes the soil here is acidic  - Rhododendrons, camellias etc. in the borders grow well. And it's certainly damp here especially at this time of year. But The moss is thriving even in the sunny spots.
I'm sure it's moss (looked up Pearlwort just in case.) I don't mind leaving it but was concerned that I should be doing something. Happy to leave it alone!
