Wholewheat plain flour - not bread flour!
« on: September 20, 2017, 18:45 »
It seems that the only way to buy wholemeal plain flour is in 1kg bags of Allinsons flour at a killing £1.37-ish a kg.  No-one seems to do an own brand and the Allinson's price is silly for a bag of flour.  Wholemeal bread flour is less than £1 for 1.5kgs, and white plain flour is 45p for 1.5kgs in Aldi.  It doesnt make sense.

Do any of you clever cooks know where I can get wholemeal plain flour at a sensible price?

Allinson's plain wholemeal is reduced to a £1 in Sainsbods now. Still not cheap, I agree.

I use the 75p 1.5kg strong wholemeal and strong white bread flour in lidl for a lot of my breadmaking needs. It is great.
Asda wholemeal bread flour and brown bread flour is also 75p/79p for 1.5kg

OP doesn't want bread flour, though - according to the thread title  ;)

Wholemeal bread flour I can get (and do use).  But I like savory wholemeal scones, and farls, with casseroles etc as a change.  If I use the bread flour for them, they are really chewy, not light as they should be.  So I am looking for ordinary wholemeal flour, not strong.

Looks like I am going to have to make a trip into the big Banbury Sainsburys ....  thanks for that tip off.

Ok missed the plain flour bit.
Be honest have never even thought of using anything other than white plain flour for cakes and biscuits.
Not sure I have ever seen or contemplated wholemeal plain flour before.
As for scones I use wholemeal bread flour or white bread flour always and they are perfect.
If I make casserole dumplings its always self raising flour and suet.
On the front of the Asda wholemeal bread flour it mentions scones. It says '... get baking loaves, scones, buns and bloomers'.
Just been looking in some of my older cookery books from the early 1950's and a couple mention wholemeal scones, using oatmeal. But other recipes for wholemeal say use half and half flour measurements with either wholemeal or brown bread flour and white plain flour.
For quick Irish soda bread recipes that I'm assuming what your Farl is, all have a 3/4 to 1/4 mix of wholemeal bread flour or granary flour and white plain flour.
Anyway been weekend shopping this morning across a number of supermarkets (asda, waitrose, lidl and morrisons) and none had any wholemeal plain flour except Morrisons at £1.37 for 1kg Allinson.
Might be worth checking the health shops, we have an independent one and they had Doves Farm Organic Wholemeal fine plain flour £20 for a £25kg sack.
