Breaking Down Pallets
« on: February 18, 2017, 12:06 »
Does anyone have any good tips for breaking up pallets in to useful usable planks.
I have been donated half a dozen to go towards a new project and I think theres more on the way!
I have a bad habbit of spitting them when trying to pull them apart...

A nail puller is a great help.
Also cutting the worst end off inside the nails so you can pull the wood strip while jemmying .

I've used a bolster chisel and lump hammer to cut through the nails. It kept the wood intact but it wasn't easy.

The easy way is to use this tool - Roughneck Demolition and Lifting bar

http://allotment-ideas.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/pallet_dismantle_01c.jpg

£18 - young Brit came up with the design - its worth your 18 gold coloured coins, spend it before it devalues anymore.

"How is that allotment site, I'd heard its heavy going, clay like..."

That looks good but needs a tube across the two prongs for lifting pallet boards to avoid splitting.

I've been using the tool all last year, must have completely dismantled about 30 pallets in that time and not had any issues.

Always prise up the slat as its joined to the centre strut to start then move onto the outer struts.
